Mosquitoes are aquatic insects which are notorious for spreading dangerous deceases such as Dengue, Filarial, Malaria & Japanese Encephalitis. They breed in water and after a complete metamorphosis reach adulthood, at which time, they become a nuisance and a vector.  

Sri Lanka itself has been plagued by Mosquito afflicted diseases severely over different time durations over the past few years. In some cases, they have turned out to be quite fatal taking away the lives of plenty. Like any disease, early identification and control is key to treating them, although being mindful and preventing them is a more favourable outcome.

Mosquito treatments are generally divided into two (02) segments i.e.

• Larvae Control Treatment – Treatment is carried out to water pools or containers of all sizes.  They breed in clear water as well as contaminated water, depending on the species.

• Adult Mosquito Control – Though it is the female mosquito that feeds on human blood which causes disease transmission, they rest on walls inside and outside human habitat. Further, they rest on foliage on the underside of leaves.  This necessitates treatment to breeding grounds, indoor and outdoor treatments and open spaces. 

There is a 4-dimensional method of treatment which is:

1. Usage of insect growth regulators or Parasitic Living Organism to control larvae in water,
2. Indoor & Outdoor wall spraying against adult mosquitoes,
3. Water based misting indoors and,
4. Thermal flogging of vacant spaces of adult mosquitoes in flight.

However, it should be noted that any treatment for mosquitoes should be carried out only by professionals using specific insecticides and larvicides in an absolutely safe and effective manner.  It should also be noted that the combined method of treatment should be decided and executed, only by a professional with adequate experience in the field.
